Urethane (Ethyl Carbamate),99%,C069715
Description
Urethane (Ethyl carbamate), the ethyl ester of carbamic acid, is a fermentation byproduct found in various food products. It is known to inhibit the growth of bacteria, protozoa, sea urchin eggs, and plant tissues in vitro [1].
Applications
Urethane is utilized in animal research to establish tumor models. Historically, it has been used to induce hypnosis and narcosis in mammals, fish, and amphibians. When administered at anesthetic doses (e.g., 1-1.2 g/kg body weight for rats), urethane is generally safe, causing minimal alterations in blood pressure, aortic blood flow, and blood-gas levels [1].
Additionally, at a dosage of 1g/kg via intraperitoneal (IP) injection, urethane arrests cell division in the crypt of Lieberkühn cells in mice [1].
As a clastogen, urethane is effective in inducing sister chromatid exchanges in various cell types. It demonstrates variable results with cells in vitro, making it a useful clastogen for studies in mammalian somatic cells in vivo [2].
